Sadako Sasaki (January 7, 1943 –October 25, 1955) was a Japanese girl who lived near Misasa Bridge in Hiroshima, Japan. She was only two years old when the atom bomb was dropped on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. As she grew up, Sadako was a strong, courageous and athletic girl. In 1954, at age eleven, while practicing for a big race, she became dizzy and fell to the ground. Sadako was diagnosed with leukemia, the ''atom bomb disease''...
Patriotism is an intensely personal act. It comes in as many colors as
the rainbow... as many flavors as your favorite ice cream shoppe.
Patriotism is loud, it is quiet, it is maybe even silent.
Patriotism can be expressed as an act of defense, or it can come in the form
of nurturing. It can be seen in the eyes of those young and old.
Patriotism is not an American act... it is an act of all humans
who love the terrain they call home.
It is the stance of YGG that even those who express NO patriotism at
all, would still defend their home turf and their homes, as quickly and
viciously as the mother bear defends her cubs.
A Special Place For GURLS :-)
What Do Cherries And The Color Pink Have To Do With Patriotism?
What Do All Of These Have To Do With Origami?
by Leanne, Your YGG Editor
Hey there! And welcome to YouGoGurl.com (YGG)
This is a Web site for GIRLS! Mostly, we spell it GURLs, here. That's because of the ''URLs'' part of the word -- and boy (girl?), do we LOVE THE INTENET. Girls in High School, and also middle school and Community College ages will find things hoppin' round here!
The site is geared to those who are beginning to think about what to do with life... and perhaps going on for more schooling is part of that. But the BIGGEST MOSTLY, is to get you to think about your world around you... and where do you fit in?
Shoutin' Happy Thoughts On The Color Pink
Pink is NOT just for little gurls! Pinks & Browns
are totally hot right now. But nobody can tell you exactly how to decorate your room.
I definitely think a big throw rug and a drapery on the wall is a great idea. Look for
GREAT wall draperies of all different designs, and even some of the decorative rugs --
they work well on a wall, as well.
If pink carpet is not to your taste, use throw rugs in your chosen colors, and let your
personality shine through!
Because Pink is very ''in'' right now, and more so when offset with
a deep chocolate brown or olive green -- I experimented painting varying widths of
vertical stripes in my office with a beige, a chocolate, and a robin's egg blue. But
it may have looked more spectacular with a pink instead of the blue.
Color-blocking would also look terrific -- just tape out large squares and paint them
in your colors... maybe do different colors of beige, tan, and chocolate.
No matter the bright color you choose (pink or blue, or even violet hues) you can always
get an inexpensive neutral rug to tie the elements together.
Go with the flow! Instead of decorating with Cherries, ponder using
black and grey, and do a funky retro 50s feel! Poodle skirts, record albums and old
records on the wall... somewhat like an old diner -- think Happy Days reruns!
For this look, I would paint the walls white. Some black and white checkerboard motif
would be wonderful with this style, with your PINKS! Consider ''fluffy stuff'' that went with the time period... cashmere or mohair, in some throw blankets, or even a pink mohair sweater on the wall!
Cherries! Health to your body, and health to your vision and emotions!
History & Geography. Cherries have been dated back to as early as 300 BC. They reportedly were given their name from a city in Turkey -- Cerasus.
During the Middle Ages, people decided that cherries needed to be eaten at the start of a meal. Cherries were thought of as a ''cold'' fruit that would make people susceptible to fevers because they reportedly lowered the temperature of the body.
Keep reading, as our early ancestors were really on to something! Science has discovered that elements in cherries are extremely good for you. Perhaps we should not feel guilty, eating that cherry pie!
''For decades, cherries slid by on reputation only. The tangy little orbs of deliciousness have been credited with an array of health advantages, from soothing gout and arthritis to helping with a good night's sleep.
''[It has been] found that tart cherries contain significant amounts of melatonin — a hormone produced in the brain's pineal gland that has been credited with slowing the aging process, and fighting insomnia and jet lag. It's also being studied as a potential treatment for cancer, depression and other diseases and disorders.
''[It's nice to know you are] using a natural product, and not a medicinal remedy that 'gives you a druggy feeling...' 'Natural' is a top selling point whether you're using cherry concentrate or just grabbing a bunch of cherries to munch. (MSN Health: Diet & Fitness: Are cherries the new wonder fruit? By Bob Trott)
Some Thoughts On War And Peace
I guess an ''identity crises'' is a normal part of growing up -- but it was widely talked and accepted in the 60s. We took pride in the depth of our crises! It was as real as ''Earth Day'' or cutting classes to spend hours on The Hill in Boulder, Colorado. I am, to you, probably older than dinosaur dirt, but I remember those years as clearly as if they were yesterday.
If I could return to those years and change some things, one thing would be to be more knowledgeable about the war years of Vietnam and what place women played in that and other wars -- and how Vietnam affected the path of my life. For YOU, there are similar happenings. The War in Iraq! The Great Tsunami... which did more than just rearrange huge places in the Orient. The impending gasoline crisis.
Gurls. We have our work cut out for us :-) ...Join this AgingBoulderFlowerChild and let's rock the world.
Here's my take on these issues. As one who, as a teen gurl, stood up and sat down (strike) for the evils of the Vietnam War... and later cried, mourned, and rejoiced through Desert Storm
and now Iraq... whether we hate war or we love war (there are those who do!), we must be very thankful to those who went.
Some returned, many did not. But we owe them our freedom, today.
My son is a Marine in Iraq. I have a very similar outlook to the one I had in the Nam years, but with a higher degree of hope that somehow we've learned something from all of this. Viewing this from a mother's eyes is different and yet the same, as from the teen's eyes of the 60s.
Well, I hope I haven't bored you to tears! I needed to give my review on War and Peace. Now, THERE is a bit of boredom you might want to look into! Tolstoy's War and Peace -- one of the longest books in the history of humanity, and the only thing more boring than the book was the movie made in the 60s! Here is the solution:
As a fan of great Literature, I recommend you even give reading the entire book a try. You will have something to be proud of, once finished! I think you could put that one on a job application! ("I am a great one for finishing hard projects," for example.)

Puzzles Are For Children, I Hear You Say!
Well, WAIT! Puzzles Are Fun At Any Age!
And, Truly -- You've Just Used Many Items From An Architect's Tool Kit!
In pondering the placement of the puzzle pieces, you began thinking about the importance of space, and how things fit together visually, as well as for comfort.
Since your bedroom is YOUR private spot, you also probably thought about how design and objects affect you in that one place that is yours and only yours.
To complete the puzzle, you had to think about colors, textures, "line of sight" and perspective. You also had unexpected surprises, as the puzzle is double-sided. In creating your own living space, you will come upon surprises in a similar way.
Most importantly, just like an architect preparing for a creation in marble or wood... you most likely found inspirations springing out of nowhere! Ideas came to you about what you could do with things you already own, and began to dream of what you would like to add, so that your room is absolutely perfect for YOU.

Talking About Patriotism...
Oops, Were We Talking About Patriotism?
Well, Now Is A Good Time For Doing That!
Why is everyone sporting Red-White-And-Blue?... other than the fact that they are great colors, of course! I'd give anything
to have this Hoodie!
My teen years were the Viet Nam war years, the 60s, the Bob Dylan ''Blowin' In
The Wind'' years ... and back then it was more common to hear about flag burning,
than flag wearing! And this cutie is just not my size ;-))
So why IS everyone wearing our country's colors?
911? Iraq? 'Cuz everyone else is wearing this great color combo?

Good Ol' Harley Davidson!
Wow! ... Is H.D. Patriotic??
You Betcha!!
Harley Biker Club "Spirit" Bear
Harley Davidson celebrated its 100th Anniversary
in 2003!
"In 1917, one-third of all Harley-Davidsons were sent overseas to the U.S. Military to
fulfill their patriotic call and to aid in the war effort. The following year, roughly
half of the motorcycles produced were sold to the U.S. military.
"In the end, about 20,000 motorcycles were used in the war, most of them Harley-Davidsons.
By this time Harley-Davidson was the biggest motorcycle factory in the world with
nearly 2,000 dealerships worldwide."
"In the 1940's, the Harley-Davidson once again answered the patriotic call and sent
its motorcycles overseas to aid in the war effort. In 1941, civilian production on
the motorcycle was mostly suspended as the company turned out motorcycles for the
war.
"Because of their commitment and excellence, Harley-Davidson received the
Army-Navy "E" award [and] this wouldn't be the last time."
